How to Get My Wife to Play Warhammer ? Episode 2

After assembling all the models “fairly safely,” it was time to learn how to play. The Kill Team starter set offers several scenarios perfect for beginner players.

First, we started by learning how to move around, just like in video games. Though we didn’t have to rotate the camera or use the WSAD keys to complete the first tutorial. All it took was a measuring stick and the determination to position it correctly without accidentally bumping into the models. We’d played Warcry before, so this was a piece of cake for us.

Next, we moved on to learning how to shoot and identify cover. Shooting is a typical dice-rolling fest for the attacker, and for the defender, it’s a test of rolling saves. A piece of cake.

It was trickier when it came to figuring out whether someone was in cover or not. The rulebook had a few visual examples, but in some situations we still weren’t 100% sure. At that point, though, my wife said it was fine, so we were able to continue our Warhammer day.

The next tutorial taught us hand-to-hand combat. In my opinion, this is the best aspect of Kill Team. The decisions we have to make, taking our results into account, are just awesome. We resolve all dice rolls alternately and have to calculate whether to strike our opponent or discard their dice so that our fighter can survive. Admittedly, there was a slight hiccup, but it was mainly because we were hungry. So we took a short break to eat and replenish our own shields.

In the next scenario, we combined what we’d learned from the previous tutorials to prepare for the grand finale.

Overall, we rate the introduction to Kill Team very highly. The available tutorials clearly explained the rules of the game and included many visual examples. We really liked that each subsequent tutorial added a small rule, smoothly expanding our capabilities.

After completing all the introductory scenarios, it was time for the ultimate test of our skills.

To be continued in the next Warhammer post…
