First we need to choose the adventure we want to experience. At least that’s what we’ll hope for. There are 6 scenarios waiting for us in the box. Each of them is a separate story, which treats us with an interesting plot and its mechanics. Sometimes we have to blow something up, judge someone or even find the keys that will lead us to a mysterious tower. One of the adventures is even in German. However, I’m afraid to open the box because I don’t know if the text on it offends me or tells me something nice.
Cthulubility stands at a high level
The best thing about Cthulhu Death May Die is that I can add any old one to any adventure. Literally from every installment. Once I’ll face Cthulhu himself, and in the next mission I’ll dance with the King in Yellow. I follow the rule that the closer I get to the weekend, then I choose a boss with more tentacles….
In Fear of the Unknown, there’s Tsathoggua, who tires us out by saying his name backwards, and Azathoth, a tentacle creature who empowers his mates and plays co-op with them. What’s also great is that each old one has its own mechanics that reflect its Lovecraftian being.
The same happens with our investigators. We can mix them up between all the boxes. I’ll play a nun once, a boy with matches later, and a Huikong on Friday afternoon.
On top of that, we now get the option to add other minor monsters to each scenario. This may increase the difficulty of the gameplay, but in the process it also increases the replayability of the game. This ensures that my painted monsters from the first box will no longer be forgotten.
The gameplay in Cthulhu Death May Die is divided into two phases
Our first task is to interrupt the ritual. We walk around the tiles, fight various horrors and try to fulfil the mission objectives. Straightforward and nothing to be afraid of. After all, nothing bad awaits us. Such a feeling can accompany us at the beginning of any adventure. Therefore, I invite you all to the second stage of the game.
After we stop the ritual (or not), He himself will land on the board. The great eternal that we have chosen for ourselves. The fight against him consists mainly in beating him with dice. However, it won’t be easy. Because bosses have several stages and each time one health bar goes down, their health resets and their potential expands. You can feel it as they become stronger. We also feel more stress and are literally We are never sure if we will succeed.
Although it’s not like we’re defenceless. Because during the gameplay we collect various items, helpers and sometimes not very useful curses. All these factors modify our play style to some extent.
In this new set, we also get magical artefacts that provide us with unique abilities and even become stronger when we reach a certain threshold of insanity.
You are crazy
However, the best thing about the game is balancing our insanity. Because the crazier we get the stronger we become. We unlock new skills and will roll more dice. However, we can’t overdo it. Because when we reach the end of the track we are just Dead. For me, this is the best aspect of the game. The loss of sanity comes from rolls, events and from monsters. Although, thanks to the dice rerolls, it’s up to us to decide when it’s worth losing and when it’s worth keeping our sanity.
Each time we reach a certain threshold on the track of sanity, our illness is also activated. In Fear of the Unknown, my favourites were included. That is, megalomania and hoarding. They perfectly reflect my whole personality.…
Summary
Cthulhu Death May Die Fear of the Unknown is a typical game for me. Because it has sensational figures, Lovecraft atmosphere, challenging boss battles, and most importantly, there is incredible excitement during the gameplay. Especially when only one roll separates us from losing. That’s when I get my hands on that big handful of dice, my wife flies forward like a kamikaze to pave the way for me, and I, thanks to my rerolling ability, stick such a punch into the old one that it lands on the sushi plate. This is something I like about board games.
